Plate-Loaded Shrug Machine

A plate-loaded shrug machine you can use seated or standing, gripping handles beside you. It loads the upper traps heavily without balancing a bar. Good for lifters who want stable, heavy trap work with less grip and balance demand.

Muscles worked

The upper traps lift the shoulder blades toward the ears. The machine's handles sit at your sides, so the arms hang naturally and the traps take the load directly.

How to set up

  1. Choose seated or standing and set the seat if needed so handles sit at arm's length.
  2. Load plates evenly on both sides.
  3. Grab the handles with a neutral grip and stand or sit tall.
  4. Brace your abs and keep your chin neutral.

How to do each rep

  1. Shrug the shoulders straight up toward your ears.
  2. Pause briefly at the top.
  3. Lower slowly until your shoulders are fully down and stretched.
  4. Keep the arms straight throughout.

Common plate-loaded shrug machine mistakes

Bending the elbows

Keep the arms straight so the traps lift the load, not the biceps.

Rushing reps

Pause at the top and lower over two seconds to keep tension on the traps.

Loading too heavy for full range

Pick a weight that lets you shrug high and lower fully.

Sets, reps, and progression

Surpass starts the plate-loaded shrug machine at 8–15 reps with about 1 reps in reserve. As an isolation exercise it fits well after your main compound lifts.

Add plates once you reach the top of your rep range with full pauses. Use straps when grip fails first.

Know what to lift next time

Surpass shows what you lifted last time beside a target for this set, and adjusts it from your reps and RIR. Free on iPhone, no account needed.

Plate-Loaded Shrug Machine alternatives

These train the same main muscles. Swap when the equipment is busy, something hurts, or progress has stalled for several weeks.

Questions

Is a shrug machine better than barbell shrugs?

Not better, just easier to set up and more stable. It lets you focus on the traps without balancing a bar against your legs.

Seated or standing on the shrug machine?

Seated cuts out leg drive and keeps you honest. Standing allows more load; use whichever lets you train the full range.
