Pyrroloquinoline quinone, or PQQ, is a redox-active compound marketed for mitochondrial biogenesis, energy, and healthy ageing. Human studies have measured some mitochondrial-related and inflammatory biomarkers. That is not the same as proving a better squat, more muscle, or faster recovery.

Mechanism versus outcome

PQQ is studied in relation to redox signalling and mitochondrial pathways. Cell and animal work can suggest how an ingredient might work, but it cannot establish a useful sports effect. Even a human change in a marker such as PGC-1α needs to be connected to a meaningful performance or health outcome before it becomes a recommendation.

What human trials show

Human PQQ trials have generally focused on cognition, inflammation, metabolism, or mitochondrial-related biomarkers. They have not established a reliable benefit for resistance-training hypertrophy or strength in trained lifters. A mitochondrial signal may be scientifically interesting without changing the amount of quality work a person can perform.

This is why claims that PQQ “creates new mitochondria in muscle,” improves recovery between sets, or combats anabolic resistance should be described as hypotheses rather than expected results.

Practical priority and safety

PQQ is optional and low priority for someone whose goal is muscle or strength. Protein, energy intake, creatine, sleep, and a progressive program have a more direct evidence base.

For PQQ to move higher on that list, researchers would need to show a reproducible benefit in healthy resistance-trained people using a transparent product, with outcomes such as strength, muscle size, training volume, recovery, and adverse events. A change in a mitochondrial or inflammatory marker would be a useful lead, but it would not be enough to recommend the supplement for hypertrophy.

If you consider it, use a transparent product, follow the label, and avoid stacking several novel mitochondrial supplements at once. Do not infer efficacy from a temporary sense of energy or from a blood marker. People with medical conditions, pregnancy, or regular medication should ask a healthcare professional.

Bottom line

PQQ is a plausible research compound with some human biomarker and non-training trials. Evidence does not currently establish a predictable strength, hypertrophy, or recovery effect for trained lifters. It belongs in the “interesting but unproven” category, not in the essential stack.
