A training split is simply the way weekly sessions are organized. Full-body, upper/lower, push-pull-legs, and body-part routines can all build muscle when they provide enough challenging work and are repeated consistently.
What frequency research says
An early meta-analysis suggested an advantage to training a muscle twice rather than once per week when volume was equated. A later review of 25 studies found no meaningful hypertrophy difference between higher and lower frequencies when weekly volume was equated, and concluded that frequency could be chosen by preference (review). A 2024 review also found similar strength and hypertrophy outcomes for split and full-body routines when volume was equated (split versus full-body meta-analysis).
The practical interpretation is not that frequency never matters. It can determine whether a session is too long, whether later sets lose quality, and how often a technical movement is practiced. It is a way to distribute work, not a magic hypertrophy signal.
The main options
Full body
Full-body training can suit beginners, busy lifters, and people who want a small number of weekly sessions. Use manageable exercise selection so the session does not become a succession of fatigued compound lifts.
Upper/lower
An upper/lower split offers a simple way to train major muscle groups twice weekly while keeping sessions focused. It can work well for people with four reliable training days, but it is not mandatory for growth.
Push/pull/legs
Push-pull-legs can provide focused sessions and flexible volume for people who enjoy training more often. A six-day version is not inherently better, and a rotating schedule can be adapted to fewer days.
Body-part split
Training a muscle once per week can still work when weekly work is appropriate and performance is progressing. It may be less convenient when a high amount of work is forced into one session, but “suboptimal” should not be inferred from the split name alone.
How to choose
- Start with the number of days you can reliably train.
- Distribute the weekly work so later sets remain technically useful.
- Include enough practice of important lifts without letting fatigue dominate.
- Keep the exercise setup stable long enough to judge progression.
- Adjust frequency when it improves adherence, recovery, or session quality—not because a table labels one split optimal.
The right split is the one that supports progression in load, repetitions, range of motion, or effort while leaving room for sleep, food, and ordinary life.
Bottom line
There is no universal best split. Full-body, upper/lower, push-pull-legs, and body-part routines can all be effective when volume, effort, recovery, and adherence are handled well. Choose the simplest routine that lets you perform and recover from repeatable work.
