Lifting Straps: When They Help and What They Do Not Replace

Lifting straps connect the hands to a bar or handle so grip endurance is less likely to end a pulling set. That can be useful when the target is the back, hips, or upper arms. It can also be counterproductive when grip strength itself is the goal.

The right question is not whether straps are “good” or “bad.” It is which quality should limit this particular set.

What the studies show

Controlled deadlift studies have found that straps can reduce grip fatigue and change velocity or perceived grip security in some conditions. One study of 16 men reported better maintenance of grip-related performance with straps during repeated deadlift sets.

That is evidence for a short-term equipment effect. It does not prove that straps add muscle, prevent injury, or allow every lifter to use heavier loads safely. The exercise, load, grip, skill, and participant experience still matter.

When straps can be useful

Consider them when:

  • grip fails before the target muscles on a pulling movement;
  • you are performing high-repetition rows, pulldowns, shrugs, or deadlifts;
  • the target session is back or hip work rather than grip development; or
  • a temporary hand, forearm, or skin limitation has been assessed and the setup is appropriate.

If the hands are the intended limiting factor, removing the grip challenge defeats the purpose of the set.

What straps do not do

Straps do not make a poor position, uncontrolled load, or painful movement safe. They can also make it harder to release a bar quickly, especially with figure-eight or tightly wrapped designs. Use them only when you can still control the implement and exit the exercise safely.

They also do not mean grip training disappears. If grip strength or hand endurance matters, include some strapless pulling, carries, holds, or direct grip work according to the goal.

A practical setup

  1. Warm up and perform early technical work strapless when grip practice matters.
  2. Add straps when grip—not the target muscle—is clearly limiting the planned work.
  3. Use the lightest, safest setup that lets you keep the intended range and technique.
  4. Record whether straps changed repetitions, load, target-muscle effort, or next-session recovery.
  5. Reassess if the strap causes wrist discomfort, a release problem, or the target muscle still is not the limiting factor.

There is no evidence-based requirement to use straps above a fixed percentage of one-repetition maximum or for a fixed share of weekly pulling volume. Use the accessory for the problem it solves.

The bottom line

Straps are a tool for managing grip as a limiting factor. They may help you accumulate target-muscle work in some pulling exercises, while leaving grip undertrained if used indiscriminately. Match their use to the session goal, and judge the result by the whole programme rather than by one heavier set.
